Packshots or styled product photography: choosing a scope
Compare packshots with styled product photography: uses, backgrounds, views, retouching and assets for stores, catalogues and campaigns.
A packshot presents a product clearly and consistently. Styled photography places it in a chosen setting or situation. The task determines the choice: a product page may need neutral views, while a campaign needs a scene. The two approaches can complement each other.
Photographs for comparing products
For packshots, agree background, scale, lighting and shot order. Main, reverse and detail views should support product selection. If a marketplace is involved, check its current requirements before the session rather than during upload.
Images for campaigns and brand presentation
Styled photography requires decisions about setting, props and composition. Specify the product feature that must be visible and space needed for advertising copy. An image that works full-screen may need different composition for a narrow banner or vertical post.
How should both types be commissioned?
Prepare separate packshot and styled-shot lists, including variants. Agree retouching and delivery formats. Work for Fundacja Edurela provides a product presentation example. Sales assessment needs subsequent data; the photography format alone does not determine the outcome.
Project checklist
- Assign each shot to a product page, catalogue or ad.
- Plan copy space and required crops.
- Distinguish technical retouching from changing the product’s actual appearance.
Questions and answers
Is one product image enough?
It depends on the product. Choose views that explain features needed for a decision rather than adding nearly identical photographs.
