Catalogue design and layout: from content to publication
Catalogue design and layout: structure, covers, tables, source files and revisions, with product catalogue and EM-MED examples.
Catalogue design establishes visual rules; page layout applies them throughout the publication. The work needs a structure, copy and assets for real products. Agree the page count including the cover, language versions and delivery formats before starting.
Structure and visual direction
Organise product groups and the information readers need. Approve grids, typography, images, captions and tables on sample pages. Test real names and data, including longer entries. The cover should identify the publication and match the interior.

Layout and source materials
Supply final copy, editable tables and separate image files. Label products and versions. Changes to page count or structure during layout affect the whole publication. Images and tables shape page composition through their proportions and readability.
A medical catalogue example: EM-MED
For EM-MED’s Genedrive CYP2C19 project, we organised descriptions, tables and diagrams within a green-and-white identity. Captions need clear relationships to illustrations and diagrams need an obvious sequence. The scope covers design and layout of client material, not medical authorship or printing.
Revisions and final files
Collect feedback against one PDF version with page numbers and requested changes. After updating tables, check references and captions. Confirm print requirements with the supplier and review the exported digital version. A mockup shows presentation but does not replace production-file checks.
Project checklist
- Prepare a sample page with a long description and table.
- Check numbering, captions and references after each change.
- Approve content, layout and the final file separately.
Questions and answers
Can layout use an existing design?
Yes, if the files and rules suit the new content. Check formats, fonts and editability first.
