Label design and packaging design: the differences

Label or full packaging design? Compare the artwork scope, dieline, design surfaces and information needed for a quote.

Label design concerns artwork on a defined surface, such as a bottle sticker. Packaging design may cover the front, back, sides and information across the whole form. Structural design and dieline creation are further scopes that should not be assumed included.

An existing container and label

Supply the artwork area, label shape and container sample. Check curvature, seams and areas hidden after application. The design must suit the actual use, not just a rectangle on screen. Confirm label material and colour treatment with the supplier.

Boxes, sleeves and dielines

Folded packaging needs a current dieline with cut and fold lines. Identify the panels visible after assembly. A new structural shape requires supplier input and is not implied by ordering artwork. An assembled test helps check orientation and joins.

Variants and quotation files

State the number of products, sizes and languages. Changing a variant colour differs from a new layout for another product. Supply approved copy, logo and assets. Ole!Komp for Rowaj+ illustrates information arranged across the front and back.

Project checklist

  • Supply a container sample or current dieline.
  • Identify surfaces visible after application or assembly.
  • List products, sizes and languages.

Questions and answers

Does artwork design include packaging construction?

Only when explicitly agreed. Artwork on an existing dieline and a new structural design involve different work.
