Instructional video: scope, script and filming

When does an instructional video help? Define the task, script, shots, content approval and delivery versions.

An instructional video explains a specific task in the order viewers need. It can support training, product use or service onboarding. Define what viewers should be able to do afterwards, then choose live footage, animation or a combination.

One task and a defined audience

Distinguish a beginner’s guide from a refresher for a specialist. Record the starting point, steps and intended result. For several independent tasks, consider separate videos so viewers can return to the relevant procedure easily.

Script and subject review

A subject expert should approve the sequence, component names and points needing emphasis. Specify the shot, narration and captions for each step. The camera should show a detail when it is being explained.

Testing and delivery

Test the video with someone resembling the intended viewer: can they follow the sequence without extra explanation? Agree subtitles, sound, languages and publishing locations. Product or process changes require another accuracy check. Instructional visualisations can show details that are difficult to film.

Project checklist

  • Identify the starting point and the result viewers should achieve.
  • Check that narration matches the action shown at that moment.
  • Plan an update when the process or product changes.

Questions and answers

Does video replace every written instruction?

No. The format depends on the task and process requirements. Video can support approved documentation rather than automatically replace it.
